Obituary of Maria Ana Barreira

Maria Ana Barreira, 93, of Peabody, passed away peacefully Monday evening at the Pilgrim Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Peabody, following a progressive 2-year battle with dementia. She was the beloved wife of the late Jose Barreira. Maria was born on November 10, 1925, in Sao Miguel, Azores, Portugal, daughter of the late Jose & Angelina (Ribeiro) Pimental. Prior to her retirement, she worked at a data packaging company. Maria was a woman of great faith, being a faithful parishioner of St. Anthony of Padua Church in Cambridge, and then later on Our Lady of Fatima Church in Peabody. Not only was she devoted to her faith, she was very devoted to her family. Whether it was cooking a variety of Portuguese foods, or baking some homemade desserts, she always made sure everyone was well fed, even if you were just stopping by for a quick visit. She loved Portuguese music, dancing, and making everyone laugh. She will be sorely missed by everyone who knew her. She is survived by her children, Maria Fatima da Cruz and husband Victorino da Cruz, Artur Barreira and wife Maria do Ceu Barreira, Maria de Lurdes Sousa and late husband Antonio Sousa, Joao Barreira and wife Lucia Barreira, Norberto Barreira and wife Madelena Barreira, Ana Maria Cardoso and husband Teofilo Cardoso, Antonio Jose Barreira and wife Ana Barreira, and Mario Barreira and partner Melinda Vangelist; many grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, and her siblings; Miguel Pimental, Natalia Andrade, Gloria Carroca, Ernestina Couto, Maria Jose Ribeiro, and many nieces, nephews, and a large extended family of friends. She was predeceased by her siblings, Carmenia Fontes, Antonio Pimental, and Armando Pimental. A visitation will be held on Friday, May 17, from 4 – 8P.M. at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody. Her funeral will be held on Saturday, May 18, at 9A.M. at Our Lady of Fatima Church, 50 Walsh Ave., Peabody. She will be laid to rest in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem.
