Obituary of Mary Ellen (Burke) Coleman

Mary Ellen (Burke) Coleman, 98, of Peabody, wife of the late William T. Coleman , died peacefully on Tuesday, May 14, 2019 at the NSMC Salem Hospital after a brief illness. She was born in Boston, MA on January 2, 1921, the daughter of the late John and Agnes (Groden) Burke and was raised and resided there before moving to Peabody in 1955. Mary had been a sales clerk for Filene’s Store and later Macy’s Department store at the North Shore Shopping Center, Peabody for 48 years retiring 14 years ago. During WW 11, while her husband served in the US Navy in San Diego, California she was a telephone operator at the Camp Kearney Naval Base in Miramar, CA. Mary enjoyed reading books and would read six to seven books a week for many years. She also liked travelling with her husband to Florida, Hawaii and Ireland. She was a devout member of St. John’s Church, Peabody. She was proud of her Irish heritage and recently learned that she was a 100 Percent Irish ancestry. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, William and Lucy Coleman of Salem, MA, a daughter and son-in-law, Alaine and Daniel Geary of Danvers, MA, her five grandchildren, D.J. Geary Jr., Jack Belsito, Joy Garcia, Kristy Coleman and Amy Pistone, her five great grandchildren, Daniel J. Geary 111, Ryan Belsito, Zachary Garcia, Johanna M. Geary and Ava Belsito and many nieces and nephews. She was the mother of the late Joan Belsito and the sister of the late Thomas F. Burke, Agnes Dionne and Catherine Gillingham. A Visitation will be held on Thursday, May 16, 2017 from 4:00 until 7:00 PM at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home at the 20 Church St, (Downtown) Peabody facility and also on Friday from 9:30 until 10:30 AM followed by a Funeral Mass in St. John’s Church at 11:00 AM Burial will be in Puritan Lawn Memorial Park Peabody.
