Obituary of Lucy (Handakas) Karis
Lucy (Handakas) Karis, 89, of Danvers and formerly of Peabody, died peacefully with her family by her side on Wednesday at Brightview in Danvers following a brief illness. She was the devoted wife of the late Charles Karis. Born in Haverhill, she was the daughter of the late Paraskeva and Olga (Gavriel) Handakas. She was raised and educated in Haverhill and was a graduate of Haverhill High School. Upon marrying her husband Charles, she moved to Peabody where she lived for over 56 years before moving to Brightview in Danvers 5 years ago. Lucy was a hairdresser by trade and worked throughout the North Shore before she retired. She loved entertaining, decorating and cooking international cuisine for her family and friends. She is survived by her three daughters, Andrea and her husband Gerardo Belmonte of Medford, Gabrielle Carruth of Arlington, VA and her children, Charles Zachary, Alissa, and Maxwell; and Lucy Karis of Lynnfield and her children, Charles and Laila. She was the sister of Paul Handakas of Maryland, Helen Roumeliotis of Haverhill, Flossie Frangules of Nahant, Goldie Panacopoulos of Haverhill, and Thelma Savvas of Bradford. She was predeceased by her sister Stella Valentino. A visitation will be held on Saturday from 10:00 until 11:00 AM at St. Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church, 7 Paleologos St, Peabody followed by her Funeral Service at 11:00 AM at the church to which relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Burial will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Peabody. In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes you to donate to The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America at alzfdn.org in memory of Lucy Karis.
