Obituary of William J. Murphy
William J. Murphy 87 years of Nahant formerly of Lynn, long time loving companion of the late Norma E. Mannix, died Wednesday evening at the Hunt nursing and retirement Home in Danvers.
Mr. Murphy was born May 9, 1916 in Peabody son of the late Clarence J. and Helen (McCarthy) Murphy. He was raised and educated in Belmont and graduated from Belmont High School. He then attended the Oxford Business School in Cambridge for 2 years. During WWII he served as a Sergeant in the U.S. Army and saw battle in Italy. Mr. Murphy resided in Lynn for many years before moving to Nahant in 1980.
Mr. Murphy was employed as a Highway Engineer for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Department of Public Works from 1955 until his retirement in 1980. He was an avid reader, enjoyed golfing, traveling and dining at restaurants. He was an avid Red Sox and Patriots fan and a faithful listener of Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby music.
He is survived by a son and his wife, William J. Murphy Jr. and Jane Kotarski Murphy of Peabody; a daughter and her significant other, Ann Murphy St. John and Louis J. Ruggiero of NY; 3 grandchildren, Cody M. Murphy of Peabody, Brianna D. and Kimberly A. Murphy both of St. John Virgin Islands; 2 nephews and a niece. He was also the brother of the late Eileen Webber, James Murphy and Clarence J. Joe Murphy Jr. and former husband of the late Eleanor Beth (Stevens) Murphy.
His funeral will be held Monday at 8 a.m. from the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home at the 20 Church St., Peabody location followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. in St. John the Baptist Church in Peabody. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Visiting hours Sunday 3 - 6 p.m. Burial in St. Joseph Cemetery, Lynn.
