Obituary of William A. Winn

William A. Winn, 86, of Salem and formerly of West Peabody, died Sunday morning at the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH after taking an ill turn on vacation. He was the husband of the late Elinor (Porter) Winn. He was born in Lowell on January 28, 1920, the son of the late Henry and Frances (Scanlon) Winn and was raised there and worked with the CCC Camps in New Hampshire. He then entered the Army Air Corps during WW 11 serving overseas prior to his discharge in 1946. Upon his return, he started his employment with the Friend Lumber Company of Lowell and later moved to Peabody where managed the Friend Peabody branch on Howley St. for 15 years. He then worked at the Peabody Building Supply and finally at the Forster Lumber Company in Methuen for 5 years prior to his retirement. He had been a member and past president of the Kiwanis Club of Peabody. He was an avid golfer and played at the Sagamore Spring in Lynnfield and the Old Salem Greens in Salem. He enjoyed cooking and reading, watching the Red Sox and his grandchildren’s soccer games and recitals. He is survived by a son William A. Winn and daughter, Kathleen Winn both of Salem, a brother, Dr. Henry J. Winn of Lynnfield, a sister, Dorothy Whitten of Chelmsford, two grandchildren, Shannon and Heather Winn both of Salem and many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Maurice “Sonny” Winn and Rita Huntley. A visitation will be held on Wednesday from 5:00 until 8:00 PM at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home at the new 82 Lynn St., Peabody location. His Funeral Service will be held on Thursday at 10:00 AM at the Funeral Home. Relatives and friends are kindly invited. Burial will be in St Patrick’s Cemetery, Lowell. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Jimmy Fund, 10 Brookline Place West, 6th Floor, Brookline, and Ma 02445 in his memory.
