Obituary of Nicholas P. Spiliotis
Nicholas P. Spiliotis, 61, of South Hamilton and formerly of Peabody, died peacefully Monday at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers. He was born in Salem, Ma on April 22,1945, the son of the late Peter N. and Polly (Coronios) Spiliotis and had resided in Peabody before moving to So. Hamilton 20 years ago.
He was a graduate of Peabody High School in 1965 where he was a member of the Essex County champion track team and held the discus record for three years. He also won two gold medals in the Pam Am Games in 1966.
He then entered the US Air Force where he served in Vietnam and Thailand and was the recipient of the Purple Heart, Silver Star and the Vietnam Cross of Valiantry.
Upon his discharge, he first worked with his father as a carpenter and builder throughout the North Shore.
He had an interest in sports and communication and videos that brought him to a long and successful career in the Video industry. He had coached and sponsored a women’s traveling softball team and in 1983, serving as the US Slow-Pitch Association State director, brought the first Women’s Slow Pitch Softball Tournament to Peabody that ran for four days and televised over the Eastern United States.
In the eighties, Nick covered PVMHS Football for Community Access Television. In 1984, with his own equipment, he started broadcasting many Peabody Vets. Mem. High School sports and assembled hundreds of highlight tapes for student athletes for recruiting purposes. He also started the Pressbox, a live TV sports program on Peabody Cable and continued to be active with Adams-Russell and later Cablevision in the Cable TV programs in Peabody.
He also introduced the Child ID program with the Peabody Police Dept. for the City of Peabody. Nick had been a member and a Past Master of the Jordan Lodge A.F. & A.M Masons of Peabody and was also a past master of the Amity Mosaic Lodge in Danvers and was affiliated with many lodges on the North Shore.
In 2002, Nick was inducted into the PVMHS Athletic Hall of Fame for his continued contributions to the Athletic Program and on April 15, 2003 the City of Peabody honored Nick by naming the Video Room at PVMHS the new Nicholas P. Spiliotis Media Center.
He is survived by his longtime faithful companion Effie Orgettas , two sons, Peter Spiliotis of California and Nicholas Spiliotis of Ma. and several cousins.
A Visitation will be held on Thursday from 5:00 until 8:00 PM at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home at the new 82 Lynn Street Peabody Facility. His funeral will be held on Friday at 9:00 from the Funeral Home followed by Services in St. Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church, Peabody at 10:00 AM. Burial will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Peabody.
