Obituary of Arthur O. Lewis
Arthur O. Lewis, Sr., 85 of Melrose and formally of Peabody, died early Monday afternoon at the Harborside Nursing Home in Wakefield following a brief illness. He was the husband of the late Mary (Dunne) Lewis
Born in Boston, he was the son of the late Joseph L. and Anna (Powers) Lewis. He was raised and educated in Boston, attended Boston Public Schools. He later lived in Peabody for over 35 years and has been living in Melrose for the past 18 years.
He was a veteran of World War II and served in the United States Army as a Medic. He served in Europe-African, Middle Eastern, Asiatic-Pacific, and American Theatres of operation. He was the recipient of the Good Conduct Medal, Victory Medal and Defense Medal.
He worked for Eastman Gelatin in Peabody for over 20 years in the shipping and receiving department before his retirement. He also coached little league Baseball and was known as Mr. RIP.
He is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, John Lewis of Lynn and Arthur and Barbara Lewis of Salem; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and James Souter of Hamilton and Catherine and Bruce Symmes of Danvers; nine grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. He also is survived by his longtime companion, Helen Woods of Melrose. He was the brother of the late Joseph Lewis.
His funeral service will beheld on Thursday at 8:00 AM from the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 20 Church St., Peabody Facility, followed by a Funeral Service in St. Ann’ s Church, Peabody at 9:00 AM to which relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visitation on Wednesday from 5 until 8 PM. Burial in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Peabody.
