Obituary of John J. Koen

John J. Jake Koen 79 years of Concord NH formerly of Peabody, husband of the late Mary E. (Brown) Koen, died early Monday morning at the Catholic Medical Center in Manchester NH after a brief illness. Mr. Koen was born January 7, 1925 in Salem son of the late John J. and Mary Dora (Gautreau) Koen. He was raised in Peabody and graduated from Peabody High Scholl class of 1942. During WWII he served as pilot on B-24 in the Army Air Corps with the 430 AAF BU Ephrate Washington. During the Vietnam era he served as a United States Naval Reservist. He resided in Peabody for most of his life moving to Concord NH in 1994. Mr. Koen began his working career as a lineman with New England Telephone Company and retired in 1984 from AT&T after 37 years as a telephone systems installater servicing banking institutions and other large companies on the North Shore. He was a member of the telephone Pioneers of America. He was an avid tennis player who played in Danvers and Middleton tennis clubs and also enjoyed playing golf. He is survived by a son, Patrick J. Koen of Concord, NH; a daughter, Kathleen E. Whalen of Newburyport; a brother and his wife, Richard and Ethel Inez Koen of Peabody; 4 grandchildren, Matthew Whalen of Vail CO, Shauna Shay of Bridgewater, Rebecca Koen of Concord NH and Shawn Koen of Morrisville NC and several nieces and nephews. His funeral will be held Saturday at 9 a.m. from the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home at the 20 Church St., Peabody location followed by a word of the liturgy service at 10 a.m. in St. Ann Church, Peabody. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Visiting hours Friday 4 - 8 p.m. Burial in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Peabody.
