Obituary of Joseph Bettencourt

Joseph Bettencourt, 79, of Lynn and formally of Peabody, died early Thursday evening at the Union Hospital in Lynn following a brief illness. He was the devoted husband of Maria (Lourdes) Bettencourt with whom she shared over 54 years of marriage. Born in Lawrence, he was the son of the late Henry and Filomenia (Pais) Bettencourt. He was raised in Portugal, lived in California for thirteen years, in Peabody for 39 years and has spent the last 18 years living in Lynn. Prior to his retirement, he worked in Peabody’ s Leather industry as a striper and paster for various tanneries in Peabody and North Shore. He also enjoyed gardening his vegetables and flowers. Besides his loving wife, he is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Antonio and Connie Bettencourt of Peabody and Henry Bettencourt of Lynn; a daughter, Terry Bettencourt of Lynn; a brother, Antonio Bettencourt of Portugal and also is survived by three grandchild, Tony, Jonathan, and Tanya Bettencourt all of Lynn. He was the brother of the late Theresa Ortins. His funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 8:00 AM from the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 12 Chestnut St., Peabody Facility, followed by a Funeral Mass in Our Lady of Fatima, Church, Peabody at 9:00 AM to which relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visitation on Tuesday from 5 until 8 PM. Burial in St. Mary’ s Cemetery, Salem.
