Obituary of James N Scangas
James N. Scangas, 85, of Peabody, died early Monday morning at his home following a brief illness. He was the devoted husband of Penelope (Mavroules) Scangas with whom he shared over 56 years of marriage.
Born in Peabody, he was the son of the late Nicholas and Catherine (Kamarinos) Scangas. He was a lifelong resident of the city, having attended Peabody Public Schools and was a graduate of Peabody High School, class of 1936.
He along with his family were the founders of West Lynn Creamery in Lynn which was established in 1934. Mr. Scangas was involved with West Lynn Creamery, and served on the Board and was involved with the day to day operations until 1998.
He was a veteran of World War II and served in the North Africa Theatre and the European African Middle Eastern Theatre with the United States Army. He received a Bronze Star for his participation for the Rome-Arno Campaign.
He served as a Trustee at the former J.B. Thomas Hospital in Peabody, a Director at the Helenic Credit Union, and was a member of the Hexagone Club and the Scotch Trust, both in Lynn. He also was a member of AHEPA in Peabody and the Masonic Jordan Lodge AF&AM in Peabody.
Besides his loving wife, he is survived by two daughters, Janice Scangas of Washington, D.C. and Joyce Scangas of Frances, and is also survived by several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was the brother of the late Arthur, Paul, and Angelo Scangas and the late Georgia Pappathanasi.
His funeral service will be held on Thursday at 9:00 AM from the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 12 Chestnut St., Peabody Facility, followed by a Funeral Services in St. Vasilios Church, Peabody to which relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visitation on Wednesday from 4 until 8 PM. Burial in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Peabody.
