Dear Mrs. Vrettos:

Perhaps you will remember me. I was one of Ted's "disciples" at Salem State nearly 25 years ago. In more recent years, you and Ted came -- at my invitation -- to make a presentation at the Winthrop Public Library. I also visited you once at your home, where you fed me a delicious soup made with egg and lemon.

It was with great sadness that I learned of Ted's passing. I truly loved your husband. He was a man of great warmth and honesty. Although a writer of considerable significance, he was also a beautifully humble man.

As I reflect upon my life, I realize how blessed I have been to know so many wonderful people. A small few, however, stand above the rest as truly influential and inspirational. For me, Ted was such a person.

All those years ago, during a rather turbulent time in my life, Ted helped me to realize that I have a voice. I will always remain grateful for his encouragement.

I'm sure the loss you feel right now is overwhelming. But remember that God is faithful. On some blessed day yet to come, you will again enjoy Ted's warm embrace and gentle smile.

Please know that you (and Ted) are in my prayers.

With love and gratitude,

Steve Dalton
Ted Vrettos was an inspiration to
many Salem State College students,
and a great role model for SSC
faculty. I was sorry when he retired,
and to hear of his passing, as, in
both cases, were many others. He
has left a positive permanent mark
on many students and colleagues,
something few faculty ever attain.
