Obituary of Francis J. "Bruiser" Galvin
Francis J. “Bruiser” Galvin, 86, of Peabody died peacefully Thursday morning at his home. He was the husband of Mary (Hannon) Galvin who died on June 4, 2006.
He was born in Peabody on April 4, 1920, the son of the late Michael and Mary (Rourke) Galvin and attended Peabody Schools. He was first employed at the former A.C. Lawrence Leather Company of Peabody. He later owned and operated the Federal Cleansers in Salem for 15 years.
Later he became a maintenance worker at the Essex County Registry of Deeds in Salem for 15 years prior to his retirement in 1986.
He was a veteran of WW 11 serving with the Army Air Corps. He had been a member of the Div. 11, AOH of Peabody and was named Irishman of the year. He helped coached the baseball teams in the Peabody Pony League. He was also a member of the Salem YMCA for 65 years and belonged to the Pulaski Club and the Leo Council, # 508 Knights of Columbus of Peabody.
He coached softball in Peabody and in his younger years was a football player with the former Peabody semi-pro football team, the Peabody Townies.
He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Dianne Galvin of Nashua, NH and John J. and Eva Galvin of Peabody, two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Fran and John Shirley and Sally A. and Edward Cassidy all of Peabody, five sisters, Mary “May” Mason of Peabody, Ann Smith and Eleanor Ward both of Florida, Phyllis Hanson of NC and Pauline Latawiec of Salem; five grandchildren, John and Robert Galvin, Courtney Cassidy and Patrick and Daniel Shirley; five great grandchildren, Luke, Joshua, Zachary , Nathaniel and Alexandra Galvin. He was the brother of the late John Galvin, Katherine Sullivan and Lillian Galvin.
A visitation will be held on Sunday from 5:00 until 8:00 PM at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home at the 20 Church St., Peabody location. His Funeral will be held on Monday at 10:00 AM from the Funeral Home followed by a Funeral Mass in St. John’s Church, Peabody at 11:00 AM. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem. Expressions of sympathy may be made to Hospice of No. Shore, 10 Elm St., Danvers, MA 01923.
