Obituary of John W. Mallia Sr.
John W. Mallia Sr. 74 years, husband of the late Lorraine Ellen (Chase) Mallia, died Tuesday at the Union Hospital in Lynn after being stricken while playing golf in Lynnfield.
Mr. Mallia was born December 20, 1929 in Middleberry Vermont son of the late Anthony and Jeanette (Gugliotta) Mallia. He was raised and educated in Peabody and was a lifelong resident. He served as a Private First Class in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict and remained as an Army Reservist until 1957.
Mr. Mallia along with his brother Anthony were the owners and operators of Mallia Brothers Service Station from 1945 to 1991 and also of the Circle Donut Shop both in Peabody from 1984 to 1991. His life was devoted to his children and grandchildren. He was a member of the Italian American Citizens Club, the Knights of Columbus Leo Council 508, St. Michaels Society, and very active at the Peter A. Torigian Community Life Center in Peabody. He was an avid golfer and member of the Bengay Senior Golf League at the Lynnfield Center Golf Club, card player and enjoyed woodworking as a hobby. Mr. Mallia was also known for his keen sense of humor.
He is survived by 2 sons, Gene A. McCullough of Lawrence and John W. Mallia Jr. of Peabody; 3 daughters and their spouses, Donna E. and Mark Viveiros of New Bedford, Cheryl A. and Dan Jenkins of Kannapolis NC, Jo-Ann T. Mallia and Richard Stache of Beverly; 3 brothers and their wives, George and Tina Mallia, Anthony and Grace Mallia all of Peabody, Lawrence Larry and Catherine Tina Mallia of Danvers; 4 sisters and 2 brothers-in-law, Mary Cena, Georgia Southwick, Lucie and John O’ Brien, Carmen and Elmer Wesela all of Peabody; 4 grandchildren, Nicholas Spiliotis of New Bedford, Danny Jenkins of NC, John W. Mallia III of Peabody and Matthew J. Stache of Beverly; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his siblings, Joseph and Samuel Mallia and Marguerite Cullen.
His funeral will be held Friday at 10 a.m. from the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home at the 20 Church St., Peabody location followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. in St. John the Baptist Church, Peabody. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Visiting hours Thursday 4 - 8 p.m. Burial in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Peabody. Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the N. S. Medical Center, C/O Cardiac Unit, 81 Highland Ave., Salem MA 01970.
