Obituary of John Henry Croughwell
. John Henry Croughwell, 75, a retired member of the Peabody
Fire Department, died Thursday morning at the Rosewood Nursing Home, Peabody after a long illness. He was the husband of Marjorie (Perkins) Croughwell with whom he shared 54 years of marriage.
Born and raised in Peabody, he was the son of the late
Henry J. and Loretto A. (Sullivan) Croughwell and was a graduate of Peabody High School in 1945. He then entered the U.S. Navy serving as a seaman first class on the
USS Pontotoc until his discharge. He returned to school and graduated from Burdette
College in 1949. He was first employed at the Willard- Helburn Leather Co., Peabody for 2 years. He then started on the Peabody Fire Department where he was employed for 35 years prior to his retirement in 1986. He had served his later years
With the Fire prevention unit and was active in the Firemen’ s relief association.
He did a lot of carpentry and had been a member of the American Red Cross, Peabody
Chapter. He had been active in Boy Scouts Troop # 103 of Peabody and enjoyed CB
Radio, Fishing and Bowling.
Surviving him besides his wife are 3 sons and daughter-in-laws, Edward and Soroya Croughwell of Peabody, Michael and Rosa Croughwell of Methuen and James
And Cynthia Croughwell of Lowell, 2 daughters and son-in-laws, Linda and James Shirley of Lynn and Jean and Robert Petrino of Merrimac, Ma.; a sister, Amelia Croughwell of Peabody; 12 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Frank Croughwell.
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday at 10:00 A.M. in St. Adelaide’ s Church ,Lowell St., West Peabody. Burial in Holy Hood Cemetery, Brookline. Visiting hours on Friday from 2-4 & 7-9 P.M. at the Conway facility at
12 Chestnut St., Peabody of the Conway, Cahill - Brodeur Funeral Home. Relatives and
friends kindly invited. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Peabody Firemen’ s
Relief Association, 47 Lowell St., Peabody Ma. 01960 .
