Obituary of Manuel Carvalho Afonso

Manuel Carvalho Afonso, 70, died suddenly and unexpectedly early Sunday morning at the Salem Hospital. He was the beloved husband of Luisa Domingues (Enes) Afonso of Peabody. Born in Soajo, Arcos De Valdevez in mainland Portugal, he was the son of Maria Domingues Carvalho Afonso of Portugal and the late Alexandre Afonso. He lived a couple of years in France, then emigrated to the United States, first in New London, CT in 1966 for six years, then moved to Peabody in 1972 where he settled and lived for the last 32 years. He served in the Portuguese Army with an assignment in Angola. Mr. Afonso worked as a Baker, with Mello’ s Bakery, then Continental Bakery, and finally Central Bakeries. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, was a member of the Club Luis de Camoes, or CLC Club in Peabody, Portuguese Folk Music, hunting for Pheasant and Hare, and loved spending time with family and friends. He is survived by: His wife, Luisa Domingues (Enes) Afonso of Peabody, with whom he shared 57 years of marriage; his mother, Maria Domingues Carvalho Afonso of Portugal; one son and daughter-in-law, Manuel Enes & Kendra Afonso of Merrimac, MA; two daughters and sons-in-law, Maria Afonso & Antonio da Silva and Beatriz Afonso & Jose Brasileiro, both of Peabody; six grandchildren, Anton & Celina da Silva, Andrea, Tiago and Sofia Brasileiro all of Peabody, and Madison Afonso of Merrimac; one brother, Antonio Afonso in Portugal; one sister, Rosa Carvalho of New Jersey, and several brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, great-nieces & great-nephews, and cousins . His funeral will be held on Wednesday at 9 AM from the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 12 Chestnut St. location, followed by a Funeral Mass at 10 AM in Our Lady of Fatima Church, Peabody, to which relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. A visitation will be held on Tuesday from 4 to 8 P.M. Burial will be in St. Mary’ s Cemetery, Salem.
