Obituary of George P. Routses

George P. Routses, 84, of Peabody, a well known Peabody Restaurant owner , died Friday at the Salem Hospital after a brief illness. He was the husband of the late Ethel (Kotoloski) Routses who died a year ago. Born in Peabody on October 26, 1917, he was the son of the late Peter and Stavroula (Hangos) Routses and was a graduate of Peabody High School where he was an outstanding football player. He was one of the first inductees into the Peabody High School Sports Hall of Fame. A veteran of WW 11, he enlisted in the U.S.Army in February of 1942 and served for 13 months before being wounded and discharged as a Technician, 5th grade. Upon his discharge he started the Sparta Restaurant on Walnut St which he operated With his brother for 19 years. In 1961, he opened the Whalers Pub at the North Shore Shopping Center and in 1963 bought the Wardhurst Restaurant which he ran along with his son until his retirement 10 years ago. He was known at the Shish-Kebob King of the North Shore. He had been a member of the Jordan Lodge A.F. & A.M. of Masons Of Peabody, and earlier in his career was active in the Lions Club and the Peabody Chamber of Commerce. He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Peter and Sue Routses of Danvers; a brother, Thomas Routses of Ft. Pierce, Fl., 2 grandchildren, Carrie and her husband Derek Hebbelinck and Allison Routses all of Danvers; a great Grandson, Aaron Routses of Danvers, 2 neices, Vicki Lobb of Peabody and Susan Hart Of Florida and many grand neices and grand nephews. His Funeral will be held on Tuesday at 9:00 a.m. from the Conway facility at 12 Chestnut St., Peabody of the Conway, Cahill - Brodeur Funeral Home, followed by Services in St. Vasilios Church, Peabody at 10:00 a.m. Burial in Cedar Grove Cemetery Peabody.
