Obituary of Arthur Adamopoulos
Arthur Adamopoulos, 77, beloved husband of Despina (Kalogeropoulos) Adamopoulos, passed away at his summer home in Prince Edward Island, Canada on September 1, 2004.
Adamopoulos, a son of Greek immigrants, was born in Peabody MA on August 11, 1927, and was raised during the Depression and attended Peabody Schools. He was an accomplished athlete, he started at Center on Peabody High famed 1944 championship football team and also captained the basketball team.
Following school, he entered the US Navy serving the end of
WW II and then entered the University of Rhode Island where he played on the varsity football team.
Following his graduation in 1951, he moved to Plainfield, CT. taking a position as
Teacher/Head football coach and there he met and married his wife with whom he celebrated 46 years of marriage.
He later moved to Groveland and began a career at Peabody High School where he taught science and ultimately became the Director of Physical Education. He was best known for his
accomplishments coaching the Peabody High Football Team from 1961 to 1981. He had a 9-0
undefeated team in 1968 and in 1976 went 9-0-1 and had an overall record of 129 Wins, 60 Losses and 7 ties including 58 shutout victories. He was elected to the Mass Football Coaches Hall of Fame as well as the Peabody High Athletic Hall of Fame.
Mr. Adamopoulos also had other sporting passions and owned, bred and trained thoroughbred race horses at area rack tracks including Rockingham Park and Suffolk Downs. He was an avid
golfer and long time member of the Haverhill Country Club.
Since his retirement, he split his time between Prince Edward Island and Groveland Ma.
Surviving him besides his wife are two sons and daughters-in-law, Charles, Teacher and head football coach of Lawrence Central Catholic, and his wife Beth Adamopoulos of Groveland, and
William, vice president and managing director _ Asia for Forbes Magazine and his wife, Georgette Tan Li-Hsien of Singapore, 6 grandchildren, Catherine, Zachary, Molly, Brian, Lianne and Zoe Adamopoulos and 4 brothers, Ernest and Charles Adamopoulos of Peabody, Peter Adamopoulos of La Cresenta, CA and Socrates Adamopoulos of Lynn and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services will be held on Thursday at 11:00 A.M. at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home at the 12 Chestnut St., Peabody facility. Visiting hours on Wednesday from 4:00 until 8:00 PM.
