Obituary of Charles F. Herala

Charles F. Herala, 96, of Peabody, died Monday evening at Salem Hospital following a brief illness. He was the loving husband of Mary (Scofield) Herala with whom he shared over 48 years of marriage. Born in Finland, he was the son of the late Tapani and Fredricka Herala. At age 5 years old, he immigrated to the United States and has been a resident of Peabody ever since. He worked for over 35 years for the Charlestown Navy Shipyard in Charleston as a ship fitter before retiring in 1965. Prior to his employment at the shipyard, he served with the United States Navy during World War II. He enjoyed gardening, oil painting, golfing, skiing, and Ball Room Dancing. He danced at the former Wonderland Ball Room in Revere, golf at Salem Municipal Golf course and in his youth, Skied Tuckerman’ s Ravine in New Hampshire. He also enjoyed woodworking and also attended for the past 14 years at the Peter A. Torigian Community Life Center in Peabody. He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Charles D. and Charlene Herala of Corpus Christi, TX; a brother, William Herala of Fitchburg; two grandchildren, Bradford and his wife Isabel and Chanda Herala, all of Florida; a great grandchild, Beatriz Fraga-Gomez of Florida as well as several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Winnie Herala, Edith Quill, and Betty Agunsky. His funeral service will beheld on Thursday at 10:00 AM at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 12 Chestnut St., Peabody Facility to which relatives and friends are invited attend. Visitation on Wednesday from 2-4 PM. Burial in Green lawn Cemetery, Salem. Expressions of sympathy can be sent in his name to the Calvary Baptist Church, 4 Coolidge Rd., Peabody, Ma 01960 or the Peter A. Torigian Community Center, 79 Central St., Peabody, MA 01960.
