Obituary of Charles Edward White
Charles Edward White, 93, of Peabody, died Wednesday afternoon at the Rosewood Nursing Home in Peabody following a brief illness. He was the devoted husband of the late Ruth Adele (Laffargue) White.
Born in Hoboken, NJ, he was the son of the late Frank and Emma (Zickert) White. He was raised and educated in Hoboken, New Jersey, graduating from Dickenson High School. He then attended New York University and received A BS in Electrical Engineering in 1934. In 1955, he received his MS in Electrical Engineering from the University of Connecticut.
He was Managing Editor of Microwave Journal, a telecommunications magazine before retiring in 1988. Prior to that he worked for General Radio Co., Avco Missile Systems, US Navy Medical Research Laboratory, and Electric Boat Division at General Dynamics, Radio Corporation of America and his first worked at Western Union Telegraph CO.
He was member of several Professional Affiliations including, he was a founding member of National Conference of Standards Laboratories which he served as president from 1966 - 1968, Adjunct Professor at George Washington University form 1962 - 1968, member of Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, International Scientific Radio Union and National Society of Professional Engineers.
He also received several Honors and Awards including Letter of Commendation for Outstanding Services as a Civilian Engineer for the US Navy in 1946, as well as Outstanding Achievement in Metrology and Calibration from the US Air Force Systems Command in 1964 among several other distinguished awards.
He also was very active in Community Services, he was A Life Member of Brainard Lodge No. 102 AF & AM in Niantic, Ct where he was the oldest living past Master of the Lodge. He also was a member of The Boy Scouts of America in Peabody from 1957-1968, West Congregational Church, Board of Trustees, American Red Cross Board of Directors from 1960 -1968 and the West Peabody Community Club from 1958-1969
He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Richard Kelly of Peabody, a brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Eleanor White of South Melbourne Beach, Fla., two grandchildren, Brian and his wife Jill Kelly of Braintree and Darren and his wife Kimberly of Peabody; a great grandchild, Katelyn Paige Kelly of Braintree.
His Visitation will be held on Friday from 5 until 8 PM at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 20 Church St., Peabody Facility, to which relatives and friends are invited to attend. At the request of the family, funeral services will be private.
