Obituary of Richard Harwood Meredith
Richard Harwood Meredith, of Danvers, died Friday morning on his 78th Birthday in Beverly Hospital after a short illness. He was the husband of Jessica Frances (Tartas) Meredith with whom he shared 54 years of marriage.
He was born in Kittery, Maine on October 22, 1926, the son of the late Charles and Eva (Simmons) Meredith and was raised in Lynn Ma attending Lynn Classical High School.
In November of 1943, he entered the US Navy where he served 4 years prior to his
Discharge in 1947. He was a decorated veteran serving in the Operation Tiger program of the Navy and was in the British Channel at Slapton Sands in England for over 12 hours before being rescued. He was a Bronze Star and Purple Heart Recipient and was a life member of the DAV. He was one of six siblings of Merediths that all served during WW 11.
Following his discharge, he was a mechanic for TWA Airlines in Boston Airport for 12 years and later worked in quality control with the Van Dusen Fuel Farm in East Boston that supplied fuel to the airlines for 15 years prior to his retirement.
Surviving him besides his wife are a son, Chester Meredith of Middleton, Ma., 2 brothers, Leonard Meredith of Marblehead and Francis Meredith of Raymond, NH, a sister, Rita Meredith of Revere and several nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held on Monday from 9:30 to 10:30 AM at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home at the 20 Church St., Peabody, facility ,followed by A Funeral Mass in Our Lady of Fatima Church, Peabody at 11:00 AM. Burial in Walnut Grove Cemetery, Danvers. Relatives and friends kindly invited. Expressions of sympathy may be made to Our Lady of Fatima Church, Walsh Ave., Peabody, MA 01960 in his memory.
