John A. Mastromarino, engineer and world traveler, dies at age 79
John Mastromarino, an engineer and world traveler, died at Lahey Clinic in Burlington MA on October 26. He was 79.
Son of Italian immigrants, Mr. Mastromarino was born in East Boston. He nearly died at age six from lobar pneumonia, but was saved by a doctor who traveled from California to administer serum treatment. He assumed the role of head of the family at 14 when his father died, working jobs as diverse as lumberjack and delivery driver to support the family.
Mr. Mastromarino graduated from both Northeastern University and Wentworth Institute, and started his own business, Logan Engineering, in Orient Heights in the 1960s. He became the sole supplier for Raytheon of missile parts and electronic components of his own design and continued in that capacity for decades.
Mr. Mastromarino was an adventurer who traveled the world, but Mexico held a special place in his heart. He bought a used RV in the 1970s and drove his family from Boston to Mexico, driving through 30 of the 32 Mexican states, exploring Mayan ruins and making friends along the way. He returned year after year to his favorite area, the Yucatan.
Mr. Mastromarino was a Sergeant in the Ancient & Honorable Artillery Company of Boston and traveled extensively with the group. Seeking a new outlet for his energy and love of meeting people, Mr. Mastromarino joined the staff at Home Depot in Danvers MA when in his 70’ s and worked there until shortly before his death.
He was an avid golfer who played many of the world’ s best courses. A small man, he was often underestimated on the course by anyone who didn’ t know him until they witnessed one of his long drives. Mr. Mastromarino leaves his wife Claire, and three children, John Jr., Nancy Schillereff and Susan Majot. He also leaves his sister Antoinette of East Boston, two grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
