Obituary of Walter Mathum Smith
Walter Mathum Smith, 84, of St. Petersburg, Fl and formerly of Peabody, MA died Wednesday evening at the Lahey Clinic Medical Center, Burlington after a short illness. He was the husband of Phyllis L. (Horgan) Smith with whom he shared 57 years of marriage.
He was born in Lowell, MA on September 18, 1920, the son of the late Walter M and Annie (Birtwell) Smith and was raised in Everett graduating from Everett High School. He had resided in Peabody from 1952 until moving to St. Petersburg, Fl in 1986.
He had been an electro plater working first at the F.M. Callahan Co., Malden for 20 years. Later he opened the Salem Plating Co in Salem, Ma that he operated for 12 years until his retirement in 1986.
He had been a veteran of WW 11 serving with the US Navy aboard the USS Iowa and was a member of the VFW of Everett, MA . He belonged to the Leo Council, #508,
Knights of Columbus of Peabody and was a member of the bowling league for many years .
Surviving him besides his wife are 3 daughters and 2 sons-in-law, Carolyn L and Richard Caruso of Andover, MA, Denise F. Raphael of Peabody and Cynthia L. and Samuel Stewart of Palm Harbor, FL, a brother-in-law, Richard Horgan of Everett; 8 grandchildren, Kayla and her husband Christian Hayes of Danvers, John, Luke Mathum and Chad Walter Raphael all of Peabody, Richard Mathum, Bethany Ann and Gary Andrew Caruso all of Andover, MA and Samantha Rivers of Atlanta, GA and many nieces and nephews.
His Funeral will be held on Monday at 8:15 a.m. from the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home at the 12 Chestnut St., Peabody facility followed by a funeral Mass in St. John’ s Church, Peabody at 9:00 AM Burial in Puritan Lawn Mem Park, Peabody. Visiting hours on Sunday from 4:00 until 8:00 PM. Relatives and friends kindly invited. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Disabled American Veterans, PO Box 14301, Cincinnati, OH 45250 in his memory.
