Obituary of Gaspar Simoes
Gaspar Simoes, 80, of Peabody, died Thursday evening at the Peabody Glen Nursing Home following a brief illness. He was the devoted husband of Fernanda (Figueiredo) Simoes with whom he shared over 54 years of marriage.
Born in Coimbra, Portugal, he was the son of the late Manuel and Rosaria (Marques) Simoes. He was raised and educated in Portugal, immigrated to Newark, New Jersey, and has spent the last 47 years living in Peabody. While living in Portugal, he served with the Portuguese Army.
He worked for over 30 years in the leather industry at the former Leach and Heckle Company as maintenance electrician, which is now Salem Suede, before retiring in 1988.
He enjoyed gardening, playing cards, hunting, and loved birds and animals. He also enjoyed cooking at Our Lady of Fatima’s Church Picnics and functions, but most of all; he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.
He was a member of the Club Luis De Camoes, Azorean Brotherhood of Devine Holy Ghost, Our Lady of Help and a member of Our Lady of Fatima Church, all in Peabody.
Besides his loving wife, he is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Gaspar and Janice Simoes of Beverly and Roy and Maria Simoes of Peabody, a sister, Albertine Narcisso of Portugal, four grandchildren, Nicole and Alexander of Beverly and Christina and Andrew Simoes of Peabody. He was the brother of the late Manuel Simoes.
His funeral service will be held on Monday at 9:00 AM from the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn Street, Peabody, followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00 AM in Our Lady of Fatima Church, Peabody to which relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting hours will be held on Sunday from 5:00 until 8:00 PM.
