Obituary of Maria F. Terra

Salem – Maria F. (Goulart) Terra, 86, of Salem, passed away Thursday morning, August 1, 2019 at the Hawthorne Hill Health Care Center in Danvers following a lengthy illness. She was the beloved wife of the late Januario M. Terra. Maria was born in Faial, Azores, Portugal on July 28, 1933, daughter of the late Daniel S. and Maria (Freitas) Goulart. She was raised and educated in the Azores until moving to the United States in 1968, settling in Peabody. Prior to her retirement, she had been employed at GTE Sylvania in Danvers. In her spare time, she enjoyed time tending to her garden, cooking and sharing her special dishes with the neighbors. She cherished her time with her family, laughing and always a smile on her face. She was a loving and caring person, devoted mother, and always thinking of others first. She is survived by her daughter, Brenda Terra and her partner, Laurie Dougenik of Salem, a close family friend who was like a son to her, Chico, the family dog, “Chloe”, her siblings; Jose Goulart and Manuel Goulart both of Peabody, Anna Ortins of Beverly, Tina Vargas of Salem, Bernadette Azevedo of Portugal and Lenor Furtado of Peabody, many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother, Joao Goulart. A visitation will be held on Monday, August 5, from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody, followed by a funeral Mass at Our Lady of Fatima Church, 50 Walsh Ave., Peabody at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem. Contributions may be made in her memory to a favorite charity of one’s choice.
