Obituary of Orlando Jose Bettencourt

Orlando Jose Bettencourt, 82, of Peabody, died early Sunday morning at his home following a brief illness. He was the devoted husband of Aureolinda (Conde) Bettencourt with whom he shared over 54 years of marriage. Born in Graciosa, Azores, Portugal, he was the son of the late Severo and Conceicao (Bettencourt) Bettencourt. He was raised and educated in Portugal and twenty eight years ago immigrated to the United States, settling in Peabody. While living in Peabody, he worked in the maintenance department for a few companies in Salem and Peabody, and also worked at the former Kernwood Restaurant in Lynnfield as a dishwasher. He was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Church and the Holy Ghost Society, both in Peabody. He also enjoyed hunting, singing and player musical instruments, but most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family. Besides his loving wife, he is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Maria Alice and John Mendonca of Peabody, a brother, Arlindo Bettencourt and a sister Ermalinda Bettencourt, both of Graciosa, Azores, Portugal. He is also survived by two grandchildren, Danny and Monica Mendonca of Peabody and several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Conceicao Cunha. His funeral service will be held Wednesday at 9:00 AM from the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody Facility, followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00 AM at Our Lady of Fatima Church, Peabody to which relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting hours on Tuesday from 4:00 until 8:00 PM. Burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem.
