Obituary of Maria (Clemente) Batista

Maria (Clemente) Batista, 91, formerly of Harris St., Peabody, died Monday evening at the Peabody Glen Nursing Home, Peabody after a long illness. She was the wife of the late Luciano Batista. She was born in Graciosa, Azores, Portugal on December 26, 1914, and was raised and resided there before moving to Peabody in 1955. She had been a finisher at the former Ideal Baby Shoe Company in Danvers for 20 years prior to her retirement. Maria had been a member of the Holy Ghost Society and Our Lady of Help Society and a member of Our Lady of Fatima Church. She enjoyed doing crocheting and knitting. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Manuel and Maria Batista of Standish, Maine, a brother Rouque Nunes of Peabody, two sisters, Imilda Silva of Peabody and Anna Mendonca of the Azores, Portugal, 2 grandchildren, Elaine Batista Burnham and Michael Batista both of Maine, 5 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews whom she cherished. She was the sister of the late John Nunes, Jose Clemente, Eva Silva, Iduino Nunes, Manuel Clemente, and Francisco Nunes. A Visitation will be held on Thursday from 5:00 until 8:00 PM at the Conway,Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home at the new 82 Lynn Street Peabody location. Her Funeral will be held on Friday at 9:00 AM from the Funeral Home followed by a Funeral Mass in Our Lady of Fatima Church, Peabody at 10:00 AM. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Azorean Brotherhood of the Divine Holy Ghost, 22 Howley St., Peabody, MA 01960 in her memory.
