Obituary of Alfred J. Surman
Alfred J. Surman, 87, of Naples, Florida and Beverly, MA, died peacefully on Wednesday, May 17, 2006 under the care of Hospice of Naples, Fl with his family at his side.
He was born in Peabody on February 14, 1919, the son of the late John and Julia (Sygnarski) Surman and waste youngest of eight children. He was a graduate of St. John’s Grammar School and Peabody High School in 1937.
He had been a machinist with the General Electric Co. in Lynn and Everett and was an official with the IUE AFL/CIO. Fred was also a stockbroker for many years and a member of a prominent New York Wall Street Brokerage House.
He was gifted with a beautiful voice and sang in the choir at St. Joseph’s Church in Peabody. He also sang on the radio as well as various organizations on the North Shore and was noted for his rendition of the “Ave Maria”. He also played the piano and the violin. He enjoyed playing golf.
Upon his retirement, he purchased a 30’ Airstream trailer and traveled through many states with his wife and their two Schnauzers.
In 1987, he moved to Naples, Florida where he spent the winter months there and came home to Beverly in the summers.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Anna C. (Damm) Surman of Beverly and Naples, Fl., 2 daughters and a son-in-law, Carolyn and her husband Greg Murray of Prides Crossing and Loretta Doucette of Beverly, four grandchildren, Wendy, David and Heddie Doucette and Ethan Murray and four great grandchildren, Nicholas, Isabelle and Sophia Lang and Elizabeth Doucette. He was the father-in-law of the late Richard Doucette.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 22, 2006 at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home at the 20 Church St., Peabody facility from 9:30 - 10:30 AM. Followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Mary’s Star of the Sea Church, Beverly at 11:00 A.M. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem. Relatives and friends are kindly invited. Expressions of sympathy may be made to Hospice of Naples, 1095 Whippoorwill Lane, Naples, Fl. 34105 or to No. Shore Cancer Center, 17 Centennial Dr., Peabody, MA 01960 in his memory.
