Obituary of Norm Dobson

 

Peabody – Norman R. Dobson Jr., 90, beloved husband of the late Elizabeth (Ross) Dobson, died Monday, November 25, 2019 at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

Born in Rockport, he was the son of the late Norman Sr. and Edith C. (Welch) Dobson. He was raised in Rockport and Beverly and received his education in the Beverly school system and attended the University of Massachusetts.

An honorably discharged veteran, he served his country during the Korean Conflict as a member of the United States Navy and remained in the U.S. Marine Corp. Reserves for many years.

Mr. Dobson had been employed for twenty years with the Essex County as a superintendent of the Mosquito Control Project until the time of his retirement in 1990.

Norm was involved with many military services including the American Legion, post 153 of Peabody, the AmVets Post 161 of Lynn, Disabled Americans (D.A.V.), the Navy League of the US Fleet Reserve Association and the Marine Corps Essex County Detachment.  

Besides dedication to his country, he enjoyed music and was a talented chromatic harmonica player and was president of the North Shore Musicians Association and played with a 17-piece dance orchestra, and also with the Golden Echoes.  He was very proud to serve aboard the USS Constitution as a member of the 1812 Marine Guard as an orderly to several commanding officers. Norm helped start the Toys for Tots Program in the Peabody area with his fellow members of the Marines.  He had been a member of the Jordan Lodge of Masons A.F. & A.M and the Shriners.    

      He is survived by a son Fred Dobson of Brattleboro, VT., a daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Ed Portal of Bristol, Maine, a brother, Richard Dobson of Beverly, his two sisters, Marion Tamilo of Beverly and Harriett Rounds of Foxboro, five grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.     A Visitation will be held on Sunday from 3:00 until 7:00 PM at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home at the 82 Lynn St., Peabody facility. 

A Funeral Service will be held on Monday at 10:00 AM at the Funeral Home.
