Obituary of Stanley S. Smith, Sr

Stanley S. Smith Sr., 90, of Peabody, and formerly of Wakefield, died early Sunday morning at his home following a brief illness. He was the devoted husband of the late Martha (Ogle) Smith. Born in Wakefield on February 3, 1916, he was the son of the late James and Elfreda (Sternberg) Smith. He was raised and educated in Wakefield and graduated from Wakefield High School in 1934. He has been a resident of Peabody for the past 46 years. He served with the United States Coast Guard during World War II as a pilot. Towards the end of World War II, he was stationed at Winter Island in Salem and was the area’s first helicopter pilot. After the war, he piloted cargo planes to South America for Flying Tigers, and also worked as chief pilot, flight instructor, and for the F.A.A. as a Examiner for both private and commercial planes at both Beverly Airport and East Coast Aerotech at Hanscom Field in Bedford. He finally retired many years ago from Honeywell as a Group Leader in Quality Control. Mr. Smith was a very active member of the West Congregational Church in Peabody and served on several committees associated with the Church. He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Stanley S. Smith Jr, and his wife Susan of Peabody, Bradley and Karen Smith of Danvers; a daughter and son-in-law, Andrea and Steve Arnold of Lynn, his ten grandchildren, Scott and Eric Smith, Troy Smith, Joelle LeBlanc, Nicole Diorio, Ryin Smith and Joseph, Branden, Patrick and Joy Young, and is also survived by 13 great children and several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Thelma Gallineli and Beverly McFarland. His Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday at 10:00 AM at the West Congregational Church, Peabody, to which relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visitation on Tuesday from 4:00 until 8:00 PM at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody Facility. Burial in Oak Grove Cemetery, Peabody. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Memorial Fund, West Congregational Church, 27 Johnson St., Peabody, MA 01960.
