Obituary of Eugenia S. Ortins
Eugenia S. Ortins, 86, of Peabody, passed away December 23, a the Academy Manor Nursing Home in Andover, following a brief illness. She was the beloved wife of the late Jose Ortins, who passed away in 1993.
She was born in Graciosa, Azores, Portugal, on July 7, 1933, daughter of the late Joao and Delfina (Silva) Bettencourt. She was raised and educated there prior to emigrating to the United States in 1975.
Prior to her retirement, she worked as a laborer in the leather industry in Peabody. She was a faithful parishioner of Our Lady of Fatima Church in Peabody, and also an active member of the Azorean Brotherhood of the Divine Holy Ghost in Peabody, where she volunteered a lot of her time, whether it was making Portuguese sweet bread or helping with preparations for a feasts, she enjoyed helping out in any way she could. Her caring and gentle spirit will be missed by all who knew her.
She is survived by her children and their spouses, Jose and Connie Ortins of Peabody, Maria Z. & Mozart Melo of Tewksury; her grandchildren; Jessica & her husband Frederick Halloran III, Jason Melo and his longtime companion Kate Arpin; a step-granddaughter, Cristina & her husband Miguel Silva; her grandchildren, Frederick IV, Mason, Lily, Alexander and Oliver; her step-grandchildren. Aubrey & Skylar; her siblings, Jose S. Bettencourt, Ondina B. Lobao, Albano S. Bettencourt, Zulmira B. Silva, Antero S. Bettencourt, David S. Bettencourt, all of Canada, and 24 nieces, 17 nephews, in both the U.S. and Canada. She was predeceased by her siblings, Manuel S. Bettencourt, Ermolindo S. Bettencourt, Maria B. Espinola, Armandina B. Lobao, Joao S. Bettencourt, Iduina B. Espinola, Delfina B. Mendonca, and Raimundo S. Bettencourt.
A Visitation will be held on Sunday, December 29, from 2 -5 P.M. at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody. Her funeral will be held on Monday, December 30 at 8 a.m. from the funeral home followed by a funeral mass at 9 a.m. at Our Lady of Fatima Church, 50 Walsh Ave., Peabody. She will be laid to rest in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem. Memorial contributions may be made in her name to the Azorean Brotherhood of the Divine Holy Ghost, 20 Howley St., Peabody, MA 01960.
