Obituary of Dorothy A Cassidy

Dorothy A (Riley) Cassidy, 90, of Peabody, died Tuesday December 31, 2019 at the Care Dimensions Hospice House in Lincoln, MA following a brief illness. She was the devoted wife for 41 years of the late George Joseph Cassidy who predeceased her in 1992. Born in Peabody, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Agnes (Maney) Riley and one of 9 children. She was a life-long resident of Peabody and attended Peabody schools. Dorothy deeply loved her 3 children, and took great pride and joy spending time with her grand-children and great grand-children. Dorothy was employed for 43 years by The New England Telephone and Telegraph Company and what is known today as Verizon, first as a telephone operator and then for telephone repair services. Dorothy was an active member of the Telephone Pioneers and retained many friendships developed at “Ma Bell” well beyond her working years including her dearest friend Eileen Rea. Upon her retirement from the telephone company, she relocated to Naples, FL where she enjoyed decorating her new home, spending time with her fellow telephone retirees taking in plays, luncheons and time by the pool. Over her 19 years in Naples, Dorothy would spend her summers in New England and in Seattle visiting her children and grand-children and enjoying the snowbird lifestyle. She has spent the last five years staying close to family in Peabody at Brooksby Independent Senior Living. Dorothy is survived by her two sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Joyce Cassidy of Whitinsville, MA, William and Natalie Cassidy of Danvers, MA and her daughter and son-in-law, Colleen and Sheldon Freedman of Monroe, WA as well as 4 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. Dorothy’s ashes will be buried with her beloved husband George this Spring and at that time the family will host a Celebration of Life luncheon.
