Obituary of Penelope (Mavroules) Scangas

Penelope (Mavroules) Scangas, 94, of Peabody, passed away Saturday evening at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers, following a brief illness. She was the beloved wife of the late James N. Scangas. Penelope was born in Peabody, on July 1, 1925, daughter of the late James and Stella (Zoubaneas) Mavroules. She was raised and educated in Peabody. She was a homemaker, tending to the needs of her family and household. She was a faithful member of St. Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church in Peabody, and was also a member of the Philoptochos Society. She also enjoyed cooking and was an avid reader. She was well loved and will be missed by all who knew her. She is survived by her daughters, Janice and Joyce Scangas of Switzerland; a brother, Alexander Mavroules, and many nieces, nephews, and friends. She was predeceased by her siblings, Charles, Nicholas, Michael, and George Mavroules. A visitiation will be held on Wednesday, March 11 from 8:30A.M. – 10:30 A.M. at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody. Her funeral service will follow at St. Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church, 5 Paleologos St., Peabody, at 11 A.M. Burial will follow in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Peabody. Memorial donations may be made in her name to the St. Vasilios Greek School, 5 Paleologos St., Peabody, Care Dimensions c/o Kaplan Family Hospice House, 75 Sylvan Street, B-102, Danvers, MA 01923, or any charity of one’s choice.
