I am saddened to learn of Shirley's passing. She was both a great person, and a superb teacher. I was a student in Shirley's (at that time Miss Coakley) third grade class. Her classroom was right across from the school office. I believe that it might have been early in her teaching career. She really worked to ensure that I became a good reader - even though the phonics drills seemed endless. I especially remember the in-class play we did where she had everyone dress up in costume according to their part. She worked hard to make sure that everyone was involved in all classroom activities whether it be as a classroom officer or a person with a special classroom job. Shirley set me up well for future success.
As time passed, I came back to the South school starting my career in education as a teacher. Shirley was there both as a friend and as an excellent mentor. It was fun and inspiring to see Shirley in a different light. She was a person who could give great advice, yet be lighthearted in her expressions. I also got to meet her husband Herb at school social events. Again she helped set me up for success as a teacher and administrator.
I will always remember Shirley for all the good she did - Thank You for helping me in my education and in my career! I hope her family takes comfort in knowing what a truly great person she was. Shirley - you did great - May God Bless You and your Family!

Mrs Morrison taught me in 3rd Grade @ the South School. To this day, the best teacher I ever had. Introduced me to "Charlotte's Web" by reading a chapter a day. I was so very lucky that I had a year of Mrs Morrison in my life. My condolences to you all.

We loved Shirley so much. Her time at Beaufort, SC with us is some of our best memories of Beaufort! What a great laugh. She and Maggie McBreen made quite the pair. We never knew what mischief they would get into! We have lots of Shirley stories and Brendan loves to retell them.
With love
