Obituary of Yani Makridis

Peabody – Yani Makridis 90, beloved husband of the late Praskuta (Timocin) Makridis, died Sunday, May 24, 2020 at the Beverly Hospital. Born and raised in Constantinople, Turkey, he was the son of the late Apostolos and Ephemia Makridis. As a young man he was an aspiring saxophone player who travelled around the country playing in different bands. Before immigrating the to the United States in 1974, Yani was involved in archaeology and specialized in restoring mosaics and artifacts such as the Aghia Sophia, the Blue Mosque in Contantinople, Turkey and ancient Byzantine churches in the island of Cyprus at Paphos, Monagri and St. John Chrysostom monastery. Once in the U.S., Mr. Makridis was self-employed as an art restorer at the Fenway Studios in Boston, the MFA, Harvard University and other prestigious organizations. A resident of the City of Peabody for the past forty-five years, he was a member of St. Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church in Peabody where he served as a cantor and a member of the Men’s Club at the church. He was also a member the Constantinople Society of New York. Yani was a loving father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend who will be missed by all who knew him. Surviving him are two sons, Apostolos Makridis and his wife, Susan of Marblehead and Chrisostomos Makridis of Boston, a daughter, Iris Mello of Peabody, six grandchildren, Natalie, Andres, Christina, Timothy, Michael and John and three great grandchildren, Giovanni, Luciano and Milana. He was also the grandfather of the late Gregory Mello. A private funeral service will be held at St. Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church.
