Firstly, my deepest condolences to the Gardner family on Fred's passing.
Fred was a most positive influence on both my baseball umpiring and football officiating avocations!
I won't soon forget our weekly rides together to college football officials meetings for a bunch of years, sometimes with Pat Santin. He and Pat would argue over who was the worse golfer. What a trip!
Fed was one in a million who will be sincerely missed by many.
God bless you Fred, and again, my hear felt sympathies.

To Leann and Family, We are so very sorry to hear about the Loss of Your Dear Father. He will be greatly missed. He always made us feel like part of your Family each and every time we would see him, and very welcomed. We have some wonderful memories of him which include his love for sports and his officiating at games to attending our many super bowl parties. Really enjoyed talking with him when we did get to stop by and visit him at his house and his vibrant smile. Our Love and Sympathy to all of you during this most difficult time. Hold all of those beautiful memories close to your heart always. It’s never easy to lose a parent. Take care. John & Pattie Celentano

I worked with Fred umpiring High School baseball games. One day I got a call from him to get out of work early at the Peabody Post Office because he needed another Ump to work a game on the South Shore.
He picked me up around 1, took two hours to get to the field and he told me I'd be the home plate ump, which was fine with me.
About the 3rd pitch of the game, the batter got beaned and was knocked out, I put the game on hold, the fire department and everyone else came and after an hour and a half delay the game resumed.
I had to call the game because of darkness and I told Fred on the way home never to call me for a game on the South Shore again. I didn't get home until 1am.
Funny, he called two weeks later and I went with him again to the South Shore.
He had that wonderful way about him, a little rough and gruff but still loveable.
Rest in peace Fred, you earned it.

I am sorry to hear about the passing of Fred Gardner Sr. my lifelong neighbor! As a boy I remembered how Fred came to house and read the meters for the Peabody Electric Light Co. I could not imagine that Fred would become one of my important mentors in my development as a football official for ANEFO! God bless you Fred! My condolences to Fred's family!

It was my honor to work with Fred for 40 years. He taught me, as he taught many, both the importance of rules, and how they should be applied both in baseball and in life. In 2012, I was honored to receive the FRED GARDNER award given by the NSBUA.

Fred Gardner is an icon and a legendary figure on the North Shore for his many years of selfless work in supporting all levels of sports. He was a member of many athletic Associations, served on Committees and often as President, scheduled officials for local games, worked as an official on the field, and as a score board operator in his later years. Throughout his career he was instrumental in acting as a mentor to beginning officials and helped many North Shore officials to continue on to have very successful careers in secondary schools, colleges and even the NFL and Major league baseball. Fred was known fondly as “Flags Gardner” because everyone knew that Fred was always in charge and not timid in throwing the flag for a foul. I remember a humorous tribute for Fred at a football official’s dinner at a swanky Boston restaurant. The table was set with cloth red napkins (bad choice because official’s flags at this time were red not yellow). Fred was introduced to a crowd of about 400 people and as he walked to the microphone, all of the officials stood up in unison and filled the air with red “flags” and chanted “Flags Garner!” This was a sign of respect and love for a man who had done so much for everyone else. Through all of this, Fred loved his wife and family and they acted as a team to support him. I was fortunate to be one of Fred’s proteges. I was proud and honored to be the first recipient for “The Fred C. Gardner Football Award” and I enjoyed success far beyond my dreams due to a large part because of Fred. Fred worked so tirelessly for others for so long and now deserves to rest in peace in with his beloved wife. He will live on in our hearts and will never be forgotten.
