Manuel N. Bettencourt
PEABODYManuel N. Bettencourt, 58, beloved husband of Fatima (Picanco) Bettencourt of Peabody, died peacefully Sunday morning surrounded by his entire family at the Salem Hospital, following a brief illness.
Born in Graciosa, Azores, Portugal, he was the son of Maria Conceicao (Bettencourt) Bettencourt and the late Antonio Bettencourt. He emigrated to the United States at age 17, settling in Peabody where he lived for the last 40 years.
He worked in several leather factories, then was employed doing paving with Essex Bituminus. He later started his own company, Bettencourt Hot Top which he operated for 25 years.
Mr. Bettencourt was a communicant of Our Lady of Fatima Church in Peabody, a member of the Club Luis de Camoes, the Portuguese American War Veterans Post 1 of Peabody, the B.P.O.E. Elks Lodge 1409 of Peabody, Our Lady of Help, and the Holy Ghost Society. He valued time with his family and friends, and especially loved camping at Acres of Wildlife in Maine, and had a chance to visit there with his family for the last time Labor Day weekend.
He is survived by: his wife, Fatima (Picanco) Bettencourt of Peabody, with whom he shared 33 years of marriage; one son, Andrew M. Bettencourt of Peabody; two daughters, Lily Bettencourt & her husband Tywon Haynes, and Lesly Bettencourt & her fiancée Brian McCormack, both of Peabody; three grandchildren, Alisha Bettencourt, Janae Bettencourt, and Atiya Haynes, all of Peabody; his mother, Maria Conceicao Bettencourt of Peabody; two brothers, Fernando & Linda Bettencourt and Jose Bettencourt, both of Peabody; two sisters, Maria & Americo Silva, and Judy & Paul Bonsaint, both of Peabody; six nieces and nephews, David Bettencourt, Michael Bettencourt, Stephanie & Christopher Hartford, Kevin Silva, Amie Bonsaint and Megan Bonsaint.
His funeral will be held on Wednesday at 9 AM from the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St. location, Peabody, followed by a Funeral Mass at 10 AM in Our Lady of Fatima Church, Peabody, to which relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday from 4 to 8 P.M.
Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem.
