Connie McGovern- where do I start?
Her life was long lived and I am simply one part.
To begin, in high school Connie met Frank and he stole her heart. When Frank finally returned home from the War,
They got married and started a family whom they both adored.
198 Washington Street was Frank and Connie’s home base,
With 8 kids, 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom and no personal space. I grew up hearing the stories of the children’s chores,
peeling 5lbs of potatoes and scrubbing the floors.
Connie was proud of all her kids and who they are now,
Joining leagues, getting jobs and settling down.
Connie loved that the family had taken over a whole town.
Connie became a grandmother as time went on,
Because in 1983 Gayle gave birth to Paul John.
13 more grandchildren followed fast,
And Connie became a Nana just like that.
Memorial Day parades, 4th of July races and summer cookouts, You knew food was ready when she popped her head from the window to shout. There were gatherings for the classic St. Paddy’s corned beef, and sleepovers with cousins where no one ever wanted to leave. Nana went on vacations: cruises, Ireland, New York and Maryland, but nothing beat spending the summers at the beach with everyone. She could be found under an umbrella with a little red visor,
Competitive in cornhole, sipping specialty drinks, was there anything nicer?
However, Connie is most known for her famous Sunday dinners, A weekly tradition when family members near and far would come hither. I would go when I was little and Nana would often ask if she was chopped liver, If she didn’t receive the first kiss I delivered.
She would cook all day and slave away,
So we could have something delicious to eat and a warm place to stay. Sundays were for 500 rummy and holding onto your Aces,
Or for scratching lottery tickets magically uncovered from hidden places, Or for watching black and white movies that made all but Diane sleepy, Her favorite phrase was - “Leave the gun, take the cannoli!”
Connie loved her sweets; I cannot tell a lie.
D'Orsi's, Stella D'oros, Sky Bars, she would buy,
But nothing compares to the time she realized
She came home with a dirty banana cream pie.
Every holiday Nana had enough desserts for a feast.
Thanksgiving, Easter, and Christmas, one dessert per person at the least. On Christmas, Nana gave the youngest grandchildren matching pajamas And then would have us parade around even if we didn’t wanna. My cousins and I could count on our Nana; she was always there Attending our graduations, games, and plays, making sure to grab a front row chair.
Over the years another generation came along,
In 2016, the Duchess gave us Tom.
Connie was as happy as could be, when she finally became a Grammy, and got to see the Chosen One, Declan and Emily.
As a wife, mother, Nana, and Grammy she was selfless all her life. Her acts of care illuminated her spirit, her love, shining bright.
And now reunited with Frank, we know she is alright.
Nana was family; Nana was love,
And now she will watch us all from above.
She may be gone but her memory will live on
Through the traditions and values that her family will carry on
Because those she loved have an unbreakable bond!

I would like to express my condolences to the McGovern family. I have fond memories of your mom working at Jordan Marsh and Macy's as a customer. She and Frank were also a hoot to wait on as patrons back in the day at Century House! She was such a loving person with a huge heart. Please know that I am thinking of you all. Jean Dawson
