Obituary of José Furtado Dutra

José Furtado Dutra, 85, of Salem, NH, former longtime resident of Peabody, passed away Wednesday, February 17, at the Lawrence General Hospital in Lawrence, following a brief illness. He was the beloved husband of Maria Albertina (Moitoso) Dutra, which whom he shared 60 years of marriage. José was born in Faial, Azores, Portugal, on April 19, 1935, son of the late Francisco F. Dutra and Maria Emilia Furtado. He was raised, educated in Faial, until immigrating with his family to the United States, in 1974. Prior to his retirement, he worked as a machinist at Bicknell and Fuller in Peabody. He was a parishioner of Our Lady of Fatima Church and a member of the Azorean Brotherhood of the Divine Holy Ghost. He enjoyed tending to his garden, which he took immense pride in, taking care of his chicken coop, but most importantly being surrounded by his loving family. Besides his loving wife, he is survived by a daughter and her husband, Nelia and Manuel J. DaSilva of Salem, NH; his grandchildren, Dylan M. DaSilva and his fiancée Alicia Tebbetts, and Caleb J. Dasilva; his great-grandchildren, Audrina and Colton DaSilva-Tebbetts; his sister Odilia Jorge and her husband Humberto; a brother-in-law, Jose Silveira Furtado, and many nieces, nephews, and friends. He was predeceased by his sister, Maria Helena Furtado. A visitation will be held on Sunday, February 28, from 5-8P.M. at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St. Peabody. All attendees are required to wear masks and adhere to social distancing guidelines. Funeral services will be held privately. He will be laid to rest in Pine Grove Cemetery, Salem, NH.
