Obituary of Antonio G. Veiga

Antonio G. Veiga, 77, of Peabody, a well-known member of the Portuguese community, passed away early Monday morning at Beverly Hospital with his wife and daughters by his side, following a brief but arduous battle with COVID. He was the beloved husband of Delminda (Bettencourt) Veiga, with whom he shared 47 years of marriage. Antonio was born on March 2, 1944, in Santa Cruz, Graciosa, Acores Portugal, son of the late Abilio Sousa DaCunha Veiga and Maria Graciumilde (Picanco) Veiga. He was raised and educated there prior to immigrating to the United States in 1969 where he proudly obtained his High School Diploma. He resided in Lowell MA then Pawtucket RI before settling in Peabody MA to raise his family. Prior to his retirement, he worked in the maintenance department of the Essex Agricultural and Technical High School and as a lamp manufacturer for OSRAM Sylvania prior to that. He was a member of the Azorean Brotherhood of the Divine Holy Ghost, Our Lady of Help Hall, Portuguese American War Veterans Post No. 1, Banda Recreativa and Our Lady of Fatima Church all in Peabody. In his spare time, he played on the Over 50 soccer league, enjoyed tending to his garden, listening to his favorite music especially Fados, sitting under his gazebo in his back yard. Most of all he enjoyed entertaining and being surrounded by his loving family and friends. Besides his loving wife of 47 years, he is survived by his daughters, Melanie Poole and her husband Derek of Salem MA, Malenda Veiga and her companion James Mitchell of Peabody MA; his grandchildren, Owen Antonio, Devin Carl, Nora Delminda; his sisters, Carmel Rollinson, Suzette Veiga, Selina Sousa of E.Providence and Pawtucket RI; his in-laws Manuel and Maria Silva, José and Maria Bettencourt and Maria J. Cunha; many nieces, nephews, godchildren and friends. He is predeceased by his brothers Manuel Veiga, Adelino Cunha, Eduardo Veiga, Abílio Veiga, Augusto Veiga, Mário Veiga and sisters Alda Fox, Leontina Veiga. A visitation will be held on Thursday, March 11, from 5-8P.M. at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St. His funeral mass will be held on Friday, March 12, at 10A.M in St. John the Baptist Church, 17 Chesnut St., Peabody. He will be laid to rest in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem. Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the Azorean Brotherhood of the Divine Holy Ghost, 20 Howley St., Peabody, MA 01960.
