Obituary of James “Biggie” “Bapa” Sweeney Sr.

Early Saturday morning, March 13th, 2021, James Sweeney Sr., loving husband of 40 years, father of two, grandfather of four, passed away at the age of 61. Jim was born on December 5th, 1959 in Peabody, MA to Maria Sweeney and Fredrick Sweeney. On April 18th, 1981, he married Leslie Prince of North Reading. Together they raised two children, James Sweeney Jr. and Patricia Sweeney, along with their grandchildren Emma, Kate, Bodi and Rose. There is nothing “Bapa” loved more than his grandchildren. He had a passion for studying history, in particular, his family history and the Civil War. He was a voracious reader; he was always reading the local news for the cities of Peabody and Salem. He loved taking road trips to NYC and visiting the battlefields he had read about. He was also a devoted Boston sports fan. He will always be remembered first for how funny he was and the stories he could tell, but mostly for how loving he was “No Matta!”. He was incredibly quick witted, had an infectious laugh and an enormous heart. He was deeply proud of his family, and always close to his childhood friends Scott, Paul and Ronnie. Jim was preceded in death by his father, Fredrick Sweeney, and his mother, Maria Sweeney. He is survived by his wife Leslie, his son James Jr and his wife Rachael, their children Emma and Kate, his daughter Patricia, her children Bodi and Rose Quigley, his sisters Maureen and Kathy, his brothers Joe, John and Freddy, his many cousins, nieces and nephews, and his Godparents Ceale Tighe and Louie Ciman. A Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 18th, 2021, at Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody from 9-11A.M. followed by a service in the funeral home at 11A.M. Burial will follow in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Peabody.
