Obituary of Jose Maria Machado

Jose Maria Machado PEABODY—Jose Maria Machado, 71, beloved husband of Maria Purificacao (da Silva) Machado, died peacefully in his sleep on Friday morning, October 20, 2006. Born in the village of Luz, on Graciosa, Azores, Portugal on January 20, 1935, he was the son of the late Isabel Maria and Manuel Sousa Machado. He emigrated to the United States, settling in Peabody where he lived since 1975. He worked for many years in the Leather Industry, and retired from Salem Suede. He was a communicant of Our Lady of Fatima Church, Peabody, was a member of the Holy Ghost Society, enjoyed growing grapes and making his own wine. He will be dearly missed by his family, including: his wife, Maria Purificacao (da Silva) Machado of Peabody, with whom he shared 45 years of marriage; his three children, Maria Da Luz & her husband Celestino Bettencourt, Jose Manuel Machado, and Jose Maria & his wife Teresa Machado, all of Peabody; his 6 grandchildren, who were his pride and joy, and always made him smile, Steven Bettencourt, Kevin Bettencourt, Amy Machado, Nicole Machado, Christopher Machado, and Michael Machado, all of Peabody; he was the brother of Maria Machado, Zulmira Feux, Manuel Machado, and Elvino Machado, all of Peabody; many nieces, nephews, and extended family including Brian Ortins and Melissa Ataide who loved and admired him as a strong and loving role model. His funeral will be held on Tuesday at 10:35 AM from the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 20 Church St. location, Peabody, followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:30 AM in Our Lady of Fatima Church, Peabody, to which relatives and friends are kindly invited. A visitation will be held today from 4 to 8 P.M. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem. The Machado family requests expressions of sympathy be made to the North Shore Cancer Center, 17 Centennial Dr., Peabody, MA 01960 or to the All Care Hospice of Lynn, 16 City Hall Square, Lynn, MA 01901.
