Obituary of Capt. John F. Upton

Capt. John F. Upton PEABODY—Capt. John F. Upton, 83, beloved husband of Virginia (Lund) Upton, died unexpectedly on Tuesday at the North Shore Medical Center, Salem Hospital, following a brief illness. Born in Revere, he was the son of the late Charles and Ethel Upton. He lived in Revere in his youth and attended schools there. He was a veteran of World War II, with service in the United States Army. He obtained his license as a First Class Pilot for Boston Harbor with the Merchant Marines. He later was Operations Manager with Boston Fuel Transportation Company, Inc. for eight years, then General Manager for the next 15 years. He was then was a Consultant, operating as Newbury Associates, and as Oil Broker and Manufacturers Representative in Marine Supplies. He last served as Vice President at Boston Marine from 1992 to the Present. Mr. Upton had a love for the sea, and enjoyed his career as a Captain for various ships in the Merchant Marine. He was familiar with many ports of call, from Down East Maine to Virginia. As a well-respected and gregarious person, he had many friends along the whole East Coast. He was a Past President of the Propeller Club—Port of Boston and a Charter Member and Past President Propeller Club in Portland, ME, Charter Member of the Portland, ME Pollution Abatement Committee, Past National Vice President of North Atlantic Region of Propeller Club of the United States, Past member of Foreign Commerce Club of Boston, Charter Member of the Stadium Club and avid Patriots Fan, holding seasons tickets since 1975, Past Member of MOHEOA - Maine, and past member IOMA of Massachusetts.He was a staunch supporter of Hospice, and ran several fund-raisers for the benefit of Hospice. He will be missed by many, especially by his family, including: his wife, Virginia (Lund) Upton of Peabody, with whom he shared 22 years of marriage; a son-in-law, Bruce Foster of Beverly, a step-son and daughter-in-law, James & Dianne (LaVigueur) Carisella of New Orleans, LA; two step-daughters, Donna Page of Topsfield and Patricia Carisella of Phoenix, AZ; three grandchildren, Lisa Caron of Methuen, Aimee Corkern of Amesbury, and Shayna Ortiz of Sandia, TX, and step-grandchildren, Stephen Page of Goucester, James and Olivia Carisella, both of New Orleans, LA; four step-grandchildren, Zoe, Mary-Thea, Vanessa, and Arianna-Rose Sackowicz all of Phoenix, AZ; five great-grandchildren, a brother, William Upton of FL, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Gail Foster, a brother Charles Upton, and sisters Margaret White and Ethel Tibbets. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to a visitation on Friday from 5 to 8 P.M at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St. location, Peabody, 978.531.0472. His funeral will be held on Saturday at 9 AM from the funeral home, followed by a Funeral Mass at 10 AM in Our Lady of the Assumption Church, Lynnfield, with a reception to follow, to which relatives and friends are kindly invited. Cremation will take place at a future time along with a family memorial. Memorial donations may be made in his memory to Hospice of the North Shore, 10 Elm St., Danvers, MA 01923.
