Obituary of Stella M. (Romanowicz) Bettencourt

Stella Marie (Romanowicz) Bettencourt, 82, of Peabody, died Tuesday at the Greenbriar Nursing Home in Nashua, NH after an extended illness. She was the wife of the late Joseph Bettencourt. She was born in Peabody on February 20, 1924, the daughter of the late Walter and Victoria (Grusheska) Romanowicz and had resided here all her life before moving to Brookline NH at her daughter’s residence 8 months ago. Mrs. Bettencourt had owned and operated the Betts Restaurant on Route 62 in Middleton for 25 years until her retirement in 1989. She had been an active member of the former St. Joseph’s Church in Peabody and a past president of the St. Joseph Ladies Guild. She enjoyed taking trips to Foxwoods with her friends. She was known for her cooking and taking time to help others. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Anne Marie and Gary Connors of Brookline, NH, a sister, Sophie Bagley of Peabody, four grandchildren, Christine, Sean, Katie and Quinn Connors all of Brookline, NH, her sisters-in-law, Helen Romanowicz of Peabody and Mary Romanowicz of Danvers, her brother-in-law, Bernard Judge of Woburn and several nieces and nephews. She was the mother of the late Richard Bettencourt who died last February and Linda Bettencourt and the sister of the late Emil, Walter, Henry and Albert Romanowicz, and Catherine Judge. A visitation will be held on Friday from 10:00 until 11:30 AM at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home at the 82 Lynn St., Peabody Facility. Her Funeral Service will be held there at 11:30 AM. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem.
