Obituary of Joseph M O'Boyle

Joseph M. O’Boyle, 87, of Naples, Florida and Peabody, passed away on December 27, 2006 at his home in Florida after a long illness. The youngest of 6 children, he was born in Brooklyn, NY on November 2, 1919 to James and Nora (Gibbons) O’Boyle. On January 8, 1944, Joseph married the late Marion (Nick) O’Boyle. He then went overseas for almost three years serving in the Army Corps of Engineers in World War II. Upon returning home he went to work for Allied Stores in New York City. In 1959, Allied Stores transferred him to Peabody where he was the Promotions Manager for the then newly built NorthShore Shopping Center. He was later promoted to General Manager of NorthShore Shopping Center along with other shopping centers owned by Allied Stores including Shoppers World in Framingham, MA. He always maintained his office in Peabody. One of his last major projects before retiring was enclosing the open air shopping center. Joseph retired to Naples, Florida in 1987. While working, Joseph was a member of t The Essex County Tourist Council and served on the Board of Trustees of the J.B. Thomas Hospital in Peabody. He was a long time member of the Salem Country Club in Peabody and the Royal Palm Country Club in Naples. Joseph was also one of the founders of the Peabody Day golf tournament held at Salem Country Club which raises scholarship money for the local high school students. He was the recipient of the “Pride in Peabody” Award for his dedication to the community. Joseph leaves three children, Michael O’Boyle and Kathleen Trainor of Peabody, James O’Boyle of Norwalk, CT., his son-in-law, Michael Trainor of Peabody, 3 grandchildren, Staff Sgt Kevin O’Boyle, US Army and his wife Amber of Danvers, Caitlin O’Boyle of Lynnfield and Matthew Trainor of Peabody. He has 1 great granddaughter, Melanie O’Boyle of Lynnfield. Joseph also leaves a very dear companion, Joyce Meddick of Naples and Toronto, Canada. His extended family includes Maureen O’Boyle of Lynnfield and Peter De Jong of Norwalk, CT. Joseph was preceded in death by his wife Marion in 2001 and his 5 siblings. His funeral service will be held on Saturday at 10:00 AM from the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody Facility, followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:00 AM in St. John’s Church, Peabody to which relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting hours on Friday from 4:00 until 8:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the George Peabody SCC Scholarship Fund, 113 Forest St., Peabody, MA 01960.
