Obituary of Robert E. "Bob" Callan

Robert E. “Bob” Callan, 84, husband of Rita (Poulin) Callan of Peabody, died unexpectedly on Tuesday February 27, 2007 at the Lahey North after being stricken at his home. Mr. Callan was born on July 25, 1922 in Worcester, son of the late John J. and Ada E. (McGeachey) Callan. He was raised in Worcester and graduated from South High School in Worcester Class of 1940. He then pursued his education at Dartmouth College and received his Degree in Business Administration in 1944. Before moving to Peabody in 1963, he resided in Lynn and Boston for several years. From 1945 to 1950, Mr. Callan was a professional baseball pitcher with the International League, Southern Association. He then taught High School in Bradenton Florida and at Whitman High School. Prior to his retirement in 1982, he was employed for 31 years as an executive for the New England Tel & Tel. As an avid golfer, he was a member of the Andover Country Club and was also a great TV sports enthusiast. As hobbies, he enjoyed reading, researching history and watching Jeopardy. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Robert E. Callan Jr. of Manchester, NH, Nancy A. J. Callan and her spouse Julia Ricketts of Seattle, WA and Joseph Lizotte of Palm Springs, CA; a grandson, Robert E. Callan III of Peabody; his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Frances Callan Sun City, FL, William Blaise of Worcester, Norman and Monita Cote of Melbourne FL, Leo Poulin of St. Petersburg FL and Raymond and Paulette Estes of Lynnfield and several nieces and nephews. His siblings John J. Callan Jr. and Marjorie Blaise pre deceased him. A service will be held on Saturday March 3, 2007 at 2 p.m. in the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St. (new location) Peabody. Relatives and friends may pay their respects at the funeral home from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Cremation will follow. Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the Alzheimer’s Association, 311 Arsenal St., Watertown MA 02472.
