Manuel E. Mel Madruga
PEABODY Manuel E. Mel Madruga, 85, beloved husband of Grace (Tavares) Madruga, died at his home on Tuesday morning following a lengthy illness.
Born in Peabody, he was the son of the late Joseph and Mary (Cunha) Madruga. He was a lifelong resident of the city, and attended Peabody schools. He graduated from Peabody High School.
Mr. Madruga was a veteran of World War II, with service in the United States Army. He was in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre, and the European Theatre of Operations.
He was employed with Polyvinyl Chemical of Wilmington, MA for 25 years prior to his retirement in 1985.
He was a member of the Portuguese-American War Veterans Post 1 of Peabody, past member of the VFW, a Life Member of the Knights of Columbus Leo Council 408 of Peabody, a communicant at Our Lady of Fatima Church, Peabody, he enjoyed traveling, playing guitar, and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is survived by: his wife, Grace (Tavares) Madruga of Peabody, with whom he shared 58 years of marriage; three sons & two daughters-in-law, Ronald & Kathleen Madruga and Richard Madruga, both of Peabody, and Mark & Susan Madruga of Middleton; one daughter, Laurie Madruga of Peabody; five grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren; one brother & sister-in-law, Bartholomew & Alice Madruga of Peabody; a sister and brother-in-law, Mary & Wallace L’ Italien of Salem, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a twin brother, Edmund Mac Madruga, sisters Margaret Gill, Helen Nunes, and Lucy Bettencourt.
. His funeral will be held on Friday at 9 AM from the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 12 Chestnut St. location, Peabody, followed by a Funeral Mass at 10 AM in Our Lady of Fatima Church, Peabody to which relatives and friends are kindly invited.
A visitation will be held on Thursday from 4 to 8 P.M.
Burial will be in St. Mary’ s Cemetery, Salem.
