Obituary of Manuel Sousa Lima

Manuel Sousa Lima PEABODY—Manuel Sousa Lima, 82, beloved husband of Maria (Silva) “Maria Zulmira” Lima, died Wednesday evening at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers following a lengthy illness. Born in Graciosa, Azores, Portugal, he was the son of the late Joao Lima and Filomena (Sousa) Reis. He emigrated to the United States, settling in the Peabody area where he lived for the last 39 years. Mr. Lima was a Baker in his native country, and then worked at Mello’s Bakery and Central Bakery when he first came to Peabody. He later was employed as a Machine Operator with Bicknell and Fuller in Peabody for 21 years before retiring in 1988. He was a member of the Our Lady of Fatima Church in Peabody, and enjoyed gardening, photography, and tending to his grapevines besides gatherings of his large extended family. He is survived by: his wife, Maria S. (Zulmira) Lima of Peabody; his sons and daughters, Manuel Lima of Peabody, Margaret Eiro and Lucy Melo, both of Lawrence, Maria Medina of Gloucester, Scina Picanco, Filomena Bernardo, Eleo Lima and John Lima all of Peabody; 17 grandchildren, one great-granddaughter; two sisters, Rosa Machado of Peabody and Maria da Luz Reis of Portugal, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Joao Lima. His funeral will be held on Monday at 9 AM from the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St. location, Peabody, followed by a Funeral Mass at 10 AM in Our Lady of Fatima Church, Peabody, to which relatives and friends are kindly invited. A visitation will be held on Sunday from 5 to 8 P.M. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem.
