Obituary of Manuel Assis Vieira
Manuel Assis Vieira, 74, of Peabody, died early Tuesday morning at Beverly Hospital following a brief illness. He was the devoted husband of Gertrude Ramos (de Sousa) Vieira with whom he shared over 48 years of marriage.
Born in Graciosa, Azores, Portugal, he was the son of the late Jose and Louise Sao Bento (Da Silva) Vieira. He was raised and educated in Portugal and in 1967 immigrated to the United States and had resided in Peabody for the past 40 years.
He worked in the leather industry for over 28 years, first with the Flynntan Company in Salem for18 years which was owned and operated by John Flynn and Sons. He later worked an additional 10 years for Carr Leather in Lynn before retiring.
He was a member of the Banda Recreativa de Peabody, in which he played the Guitar and the E Flat Clarinet, and was also a member of the Holy Ghost Society. He enjoyed making home made wine and tending to his garden and vegetables.
Besides his loving wife, he is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Dionisio and Robyn Vieira of Wakefield, a daughter, Maria Filomena Vieira of West Palm Beach, Fla., and 2 granddaughters, Isabel and Audrey Vieira of Wakefield. He was the brother of the late Jose Assis Vieira and Maria Assis Vieira.
His funeral service will be held on Friday at 9:00 AM from the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn Street Peabody Facility, followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00 AM in Our Lady of Fatima Church, Peabody, to which relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Visiting hours are on Thursday from 4:00 until 8:00 PM. Burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to either the North Shore Cancer Center, 17 Centennial Dr., or the Holy Ghost Society, 20-22 Howley St., both in Peabody, MA 01960.
