Arthur Athas
PEABODYArthur Athas, 91, husband of the late Mary (Karahalis) Athas, died peacefully Tuesday morning at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers following a brief illness.
Born in Salem, he was the son of the late Kyriakos “Charles” and Constantina Athas. He lived a brief time in Wisconsin, yet mostly lived on the North Shore and Greater Peabody area.
Mr. Athas developed his career as an Insurance Agent with John Hancock Mutual Life Insurance Company, and worked several years as a Deputy Tax Collector for the City of Peabody before he retired.
Arthur met his patriotic obligation by proudly serving in the United States Army during World War II, stationed with the 374th Field Artillery Battalion in the European Theatre of operations.
Besides enjoying his role as patriarch and devotion to his family, he was a member of several civic organizations including the Masons, Jordan Lodge of Peabody and earned a 50-Year Award, the UCT Service Club, St. Val’s Mens Club, and was a former member of the Boston Yacht Club in Marblehead.
He will be dearly missed by his family, including; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Kenneth & Natalie (Forbes) Athas of Beverly and Arthur Athas of CA; a daughter, Constance Athas of New York; two granddaughters, Jennifer, and her husband Marco, Mereu, and Jessica Athas, both of Boston; a brother, Charles Athas of CA, and several nieces and nephews, as well as dear friends Jerry and Dianne Allain. He was preceded in death, besides his wife, a brother Steve Athas and sister Caroline.
A visitation will take place on Friday from 4:30 to 7:30 PM at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St. location, Peabody, with a Masonic Service at 7 PM.
His funeral will be held on Saturday at 9:30 from the funeral home followed by a Funeral Service at 10:30 AM in St. Vasilios Church, Peabody to which relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend.
Burial will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Peabody.
