Obituary of Jose P. Silva

Jose P. Silva, 86, of Salem, died early Monday morning at Salem Hospital following a brief illness. He was the devoted husband of Maria (Sousa) Silva with whom he shared over 58 years of marriage. Born in Pico, Azores, Portugal, he was the son of the late Jose and Maria (Silva) Silva. He was raised and educated in Portugal and in 1968 he immigrated to the United States, and has been a resident of Salem ever since. While living in Portugal he worked on his family farm. When he arrived in the United States, he worked for over 5 years for the Victorian Leather Company in Peabody, before retiring in 1973. He was a member of the Holy Ghost Society in Peabody, and also enjoyed gardening, growing flowers and assorted vegetables. He also enjoyed walking and was a devoted member of Our Lady of Fatima Church in Peabody. Besides his loving wife, he is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Alda and Paulino Garcia of Salem, and also, he was the brother of the late Maria Pires, and is survived by his seven sisters, Victoria Avila of Portugal, Adelaide Rosa of Peabody, Ann and her husband Manuel Silveira of Hanford, CA., Filomena and Antonio Oliveira of Phoenix, AZ., Idalina and Manuel Fialho, Rosa and Manuel Bettencourt and Rosalina and Manuel Rosa, all of Hanford, CA., two grandchildren, Elizabeth Garcia and her husband Ross Brakman of Swedesboro, NJ, and Cliff Garcia of Salem, and is also survived by several nieces and nephews. His funeral service will be held on Thursday at 10:00 AM from the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody Facility, followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:00 AM in Our Lady of Fatima Church, Peabody to which relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Visiting hours are on Wednesday from 5:00 until 8:00 PM. Burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem.
